Adversities done by demi-god Shulpaani on Lord Mahavir while in meditation ~ ધ્યાનસ્થ ભગવાનને શૂલપાણિ યક્ષનો ઉપસર્ગ

Lord reaches Ashthik village & searched a place in silence to do meditation in a temple which belonged to demi god (yaksh) shulpaani on a small hill top outside that village. Lord asked for staying at that place to villagers of that village who told lord that this demi god shulpani is very dangerous & kills human whoever stay there at night so please select some place else. Lord assures all not to worry for lord & starts his meditation at that place. Yaksh Shulpaani's ego gets hurt that who is such person who dared to stay at his temple even though villagers dared him & so gets very angry on Lord. He starts doing several things such as making thunderous noise resembling that sky has fallen. Thereafter he disguised himself in several ways such as elephant, snake, vamp etc & caused several problems to lord but seeing no panic gave lots of pain to several body parts of god including eyes ears etc but our lord remains in deep meditation itself without being disturbed from anything. Seeing unmoved Lord even after all this, Shulpaani accepts self defeat & falls in feet of god. Next day when villagers knew all this, they all applauded Lord.

ભગવાન કુમાર (કર્માર-કર્મરિ?) ગામથી `અસ્થિક' ગામ પધાર્યા. ત્યાં ધ્યાન માટે નિર્જન એકાન્ત જગ્યાની શોધ કરતાં ગામ બહાર ટેકરી ઉપર આવેલાં શૂલપાણિ યક્ષના મંદિરની પસંદગી કરી. ગામ લોકોની અનુમતિ માગી પણ લોકોએ આગ્રહપૂર્વક કહ્યું કે, "આ મંદિરનો યક્ષ અતિ ક્રૂર છે. અહીં જે કોઈ રાત રહે છે તેને તે મારી નાખે છે, માટે આપ બીજે પધારો." ભગવાને કહ્યું કે "તેની ચિંતા ન કરો." તેમની અનુમતિ લઈને ભગવાન ત્યાં રહ્યા, અને સ્થળ નિર્જન થયા બાદ ધ્યાનારૂઢ બન્યા. આથી શૂલપાણિ રોષે ભરાયો અને મનોમન બોલ્યો કે "સહુએ ઘસીને ના પાડી છતાં પોતાની તાકાત ઉપર મુસ્તાક રહેનાર આ કેવો ધૃષ્ટ માણસ છે? આ તો મારી સામે પડકાર છે. હવે હું એને મારી શક્તિનો પરચો બરાબર બતાવું." તેણે તુરંત જ ભગવાનને ડરાવવા આભ તૂટી પડે એવું ભયંકર અટ્ટહાસ્ય કર્યું. હાથી, પિશાચ, સર્પાદિકનાં ભયંકર રૂપો લઈને ભગવાનને વિવિધ પ્રકારે ત્રાસ આપ્યો, છતાં તેની કશી જ અસર ન થઈ ત્યારે આંખ, કાન વગેરે માર્મિક અંગોમાં ભયંકર વેદનાઓ ઉત્પન્ન કરી. આમ છતાં અખૂટ ધૈર્યશાલી ભગવાન જરા પણ ધ્યાનભગ્ન ન બન્યા. શૂલપાણિ ભગવાનની અપ્રતિમ શક્તિથી પરાજિત થયો. એણે ક્ષમાશીલ ભગવાનના ચરણમાં પડી અપરાધોની ક્ષમા માગી, ચરણપૂજા કરી, ગુણગીતો ગાયાં અને એ યક્ષ સદાને માટે પ્રશાન્ત બન્યો. સવારે ગામના લોકો મંદિરે પહોંચ્યા અને ભગવાનની અગાધ શક્તિ અને અપાર મહિમાને જોઈ નતમસ્તક બની ભગવાનનો જયજયકાર કર્યો.
